Why custom inference chips are easier than you think: four reasons from a frontier-lab analysis
IgorCarron · x · 2026-10-26
Patrick Toulme argues frontier labs building custom chips is less impressive than it seems: they target inference only (easier than training), support transformers exclusively via large MXU matmul units, write kernels near-ISA with RL-trained coding agents, and skip high-level compilers. A truly generic GPU/TPU-class chip is far harder — expect many more inference chip startups since software cost is just token cost.
