Frontier models' hidden edge: less scaffolding spend that token-cost models miss
matt_slotnick · x · 2026-10-26
Matt Slotnick argues a consistently under-appreciated point from OpenRouter data: demand for frontier models over open ones persists because better models cut the scaffolding engineering spend needed to make models work — costs that sit outside token spend. Stronger models both enable previously impossible functionality and simplify tasks that once required heavy surrounding engineering, freeing engineers for other problems. He suspects this TCO benefit is unaccounted for in most token-consumption modeling. The quoted poster adds that Anthropic, long flat on that dataset, is now ripping.
