Motoniq position paper: robots need more than VLAs and world models
hbouammar · x · 2026-10-26
Robotics company Motoniq released a position paper, "Robots Need More Than VLAs & World Models" (arXiv:2606.06556), authored by Haitham Bou-Ammar, Mac Schwager, Jan Peters and Cesar Cadena. Core claim: robotics starts from a different constraint than LLMs — the next breakthrough won't come from copying more demonstrations, but from robots understanding the job itself: what must be true before an action, what can fail, and how to recover. The team argues the field risks converging too early on an incomplete architecture, and organizations betting everything on scaling VLA/world models alone are exposed to a correction.
