Fusion startup claims turning mercury into gold; the $482M/year figure is paper gold
FinanceYF5 · x · 2026-10-26
San Francisco fusion company Marathon Fusion claimed it used fusion neutrons to transmute mercury into stable gold, with the post drawing over 8 million views. It also published a table projecting $482M/year in revenue from electricity plus gold sales for a gigawatt-scale fusion plant — a hypothetical plant that doesn't exist yet.
The original analysis notes that mercury-to-gold transmutation has been physically possible since 1941, but economics are off by about three orders of magnitude; gold prices won't collapse. Still, this marks the first time gold has a theoretical date with being manufacturable.
