r/opensource bans all AI-related projects: 'Your tokens aren't valuable'
Pyros-SD-Models · reddit · 2026-10-25
Moderators of r/opensource announced a sweeping ban: projects that use AI, are made by AI, or are intended for AI (such as MCPs) are no longer welcome. New enforcement criteria include:
- Projects must be 1+ years old and actively maintained, have 3+ contributors, not be capstone projects, and use an OSI license.
- Posters need 1-year-old accounts with significant Reddit contributions; mods report 20 exemption requests per day, and violators get permanently banned.
- "If it's obvious you're using AI in your project, we don't want it. Tokens are cheap." Non-English posts are also rejected since AI-written and AI-translated text can't be distinguished.
- Posting LLM output means you are "never welcome back" — no temporary bans.
The rule is a stark sign of open-source backlash against AI slop.
