Researchers rebuild city power grid topology from open data, no utility secrets needed
anselm · x · 2026-10-25
Detailed urban grid maps are locked away as trade secrets by utilities, leaving planners blind about the low-voltage "last mile". An arXiv paper builds a fully open-data framework: public infrastructure data (lines, substations, transformers, poles) maps the high/medium-voltage skeleton, geospatial ML clusters OpenStreetMap building loads, and physical constraints (voltage levels, road networks) derive the final distribution topology. Validated on Oslo's Alna district and New Zealand's Waiheke Island, reconstructing complete grid hierarchy down to individual buildings — useful for rooftop solar capacity and cascading blackout analysis.
