Writing in Beijing Review, the author reports that Xinjiang is becoming a major Chinese computing hub. Engineers in Chongqing remotely use Xinjiang data centers to develop automotive AI, as electricity there costs roughly half as much while one-way network latency is just 16.2 milliseconds.
The author works in Urumqi with local doctors on AI for MRI scans, and argues cheaper compute could mean more experiments, better models and better medical tools for patients.
