Beyond record counts: a three-layer checklist for verifying agent retrieval migrations
jylusdev · reddit · 2026-10-25
A developer argues that matching record counts (e.g. 10,000 on both sides) proves nothing about a retrieval migration — one missing and one extra record balance out. Their checklist: build a small frozen catalog with similar items, one out-of-stock, one region-locked; diff original IDs and payloads; compare the eligible record set per required filter; then run the agent's real queries and verify answers and cited sources, since these checks can fail independently. If ranking changed, evaluate relevance and answer support rather than identical ordering — but a relevant item violating a required filter still fails. Save the source snapshot and query config so later catalog changes aren't mistaken for migration errors.
