Mathematician: OpenAI's Navier-Stokes solution 'not clear it could be found without AI'
skdh · x · 2026-10-25
Mathematician Sylvia Serfaty says OpenAI's claimed Navier-Stokes resolution is "extremely complex, with new ideas and surprises" and "it's not clear it could have been found without AI" — without computers, "we might be at the same point in 100 years."
She stressed the proof was "found entirely by AI, without human steering." Per OpenAI, agents exchanged 2.7M messages and produced 130B tokens; the compute bill for that week's attempts is estimated at $20M. The company says it rushed the project starting Sept 1 after rumors of rival work. Mathematician Amaury Hayat calls it "a real earthquake," long expected only after 2040.
