Open-source DNA model Carbon-X (14.8B) nears frontier scores on genomics at 1/1800th the cost
aigclink · x · 2026-10-25
Hugging Face open-sourced Carbon-X, a 14.8B model unifying DNA and natural language in one Transformer, built on Qwen3-14B with 5,515 DNA tokens (6 bases per token), 302B tokens of continued pretraining, plus SFT and verifiable-reward RL.
- Averages 66.7 across five DNA benchmarks vs GPT-6.1 Sol's 67.5 and Claude Opus 5.5's 60.9; coding-variant effect prediction hits 74.9, beating Sol's 71
- Per-query inference cost 1/1800 of GPT-6.1 Sol; BF16 weights fit a single 80GB GPU
- Demo: correctly flags an NF1 splice-site A>G variant as pathogenic and explains why, where only Sol at max effort got it right and Opus 5.5 was blocked by a content filter
Ships with Skills for Claude Code/Codex and tool-calling examples for agent workflows — a low-cost, self-hostable option for genomic database analysis and variant research.
