Etsy bans AI-generated patterns and recipes, requires real unedited product photos

Etsy announced new seller rules (Oct 22) to crack down on AI slop, in a post titled "Creativity and Trust in the Age of AI."
- AI-generated patterns, recipes, and other instructions are banned unless sellers show a real example made from them; AI mockups don't count
- Most listings now require at least one fully unedited photo of the actual product in a real setting; digital, customized, and made-to-order categories have different rules
- Penalties: sellers may owe refunds if listings materially differ, bot-generated listings without human involvement will be removed, and repeat violations can get shops banned
- VP James Ossman: "AI should support our sellers' creativity and craftsmanship, not replace them"
The thread also references Walmart's new AI agent shopping controls.
