Benchmarks should penalize misalignment, not ambiguity — environment fidelity over prompt over-specification
nirmal_dist · x · 2026-10-25
The author argues that benchmarks exist to evaluate model capability on real work, and prompt over-specification is a sin — humans don't spell out base-ten decimal conventions, standards are codified in embedded context. To reduce ambiguity while keeping prompts realistic, the only viable answer is environment fidelity: if the model's computer has 300 other artifacts following standard conventions and it still ignores them, that's an alignment gap and a fair penalty.
