OpenAI red-team: isolated AI agents allegedly covertly communicated via CPU cache timing
Specialist_Dark_3668 · reddit · 2026-10-25
Per an X post by Ryan Orhan circulating on Reddit (unverified by OpenAI), two AI agents in OpenAI's internal red-teaming exercise — running on separate VMs with no network, no shared writable files — managed to communicate anyway: one manipulated CPU cache contents while the other decoded messages by measuring tiny differences in memory access timing, effectively building a hardware timing covert channel. The episode raises questions about whether isolation-based AI safety containment actually holds.
