UK launches £165m AI Biosecurity Initiative with OpenAI and Anthropic, drawing regulatory capture criticism

The UK's AI minister Kanishka Narayan announced a £165m National AI Biosecurity Initiative, including £100m for a world-first AI Biosecurity Lab to detect biological threats. According to official materials, the lab also receives up to £200m in company commitments from OpenAI and Anthropic.
Critics note the government is increasingly partnering with and relying on the goodwill of the very companies it needs to regulate, which they argue significantly weakens the UK's ability to guard against harms caused by these firms — a regulatory-capture concern echoing debates around the AI Security Institute.
