Bitter Lesson comes to robotics: LLM arm-control performance doubles every 54 days
pwlot · x · 2026-10-25
Commenting on the arXiv paper "The Bitter Lesson Comes to Robotics," the author makes three claims:
- LLMs' ability to directly control robots will roughly correlate with generality and cross-modal capabilities
- The meta bitter-lesson: smart, efficient methods will eventually beat semi-dumb scaling, with shocking gains — another multiplier for AI/robotics acceleration
- Exploiting the capability overhang will be brutal, and almost no forecaster or futurist accounts for this
The underlying paper benchmarked nine frontier multimodal models on real robotic arms, finding performance doubling time of 54 days between July and October 2026.
