Jailbroken Kindle turns into the best e-reader: KOReader + WeRead, tweakable with Claude Code
vista8 · x · 2026-10-24
@vista8 shares an open-source recipe for turning an old jailbroken Kindle into a long-lasting budget e-reader: install KOReader plus the WeRead plugin, then let Codex or Claude Code customize the UI directly.
The companion project qiaomu-simpleui (GPL-3.0, based on SimpleUI 3.0.0) adds: a cleaner header, automatic WeRead shortcut detection, long-press hiding of books with reversible restore in settings, and preserved folder browsing. Hiding only affects display—files, annotations, and reading history stay intact. His Qiaomu Read Obsidian plugin also gained a send-to-Kindle feature supporting both stock Kindle and KOReader systems.
