Qwen3-8B Q4_K_M on an iGPU laptop: fine as a guided coding helper, not an autonomous dev
Ambitious_Answer6857 · reddit · 2026-10-24
A Reddit user tested Qwen3-8B (Q4KM) in LM Studio on a 32 GB RAM Windows machine with an AMD iGPU (dev tools in Ubuntu 24.04 on WSL2), tasking it with a real date/timezone bug in their own email parser.
- First draft (120 s) rejected: it changed things outside the task and mishandled UTC
- After pointing at the exact problem, the second draft came in 24 s, ruff-clean, with all 32 tests passing; an independent review confirmed the new test fails without the patch
- Aider with the same model produced a diff but also added an unrequested dependency and deleted code — not mergeable
Takeaway: small local models work as guided helpers when wrapped in hard guardrails (tests, linters, review), but are not autonomous developers on this class of hardware.
