Claude API Adds Workload Identity Federation to Kill Static API Keys
brada · x · 2026-10-24
Anthropic's platform docs add Workload Identity Federation (WIF): workloads can authenticate to the Claude API with short-lived OIDC tokens from your own IdP (AWS IAM, Google Cloud, GitHub Actions, Kubernetes, Okta, etc.) instead of long-lived sk-ant- keys. cjavdev shared it after seeing many struggle with API keys.
Key points:
- JWTs signed by your IdP are validated against trust rules configured in the Claude Console, returning short-lived access tokens bound to a service account
- No static secrets to mint, store, rotate, or leak; tokens expire in minutes
- Docs caution it's not a complete security solution — pair with IdP controls like workload identity binding, conditional access, and audit logging for defense in depth
