China's first fully AI-generated theatrical film took 2 years and 1.2M images

Sanxingdui, China's first fully AI-generated feature film to get a theatrical release permit, opened in cinemas on Oct 23. Bona Film Group's team spent over two years on it, generating more than 1.2 million preliminary images and running over 100 full-film iterations, split across 17 professional roles from screenwriting and cinematography to lighting, sound and editing.
Reviewers checked it frame by frame, because shots that looked fine on a phone fell apart on a cinema screen. The takeaway for AI filmmakers: watch your cut on the biggest screen you can find before calling it done.
