Mathematician Tony Feng: academia will split along an 'AI adoption' axis as consensus stalls
paulnovosad · x · 2026-10-24
Responding to calls for institutions to urgently set AI rules, mathematician Tony Feng lays out three observations for junior researchers: publication and hiring have always been driven by individual views, so consensus won't end the debate; the math job market will effectively divide along a new axis of 'level of AI adoption,' and researchers should pick where they find intellectual fulfillment; and while people disagree on AI, everyone agrees dishonesty is unacceptable — lying about AI use will likely be blacklist-worthy. He doubts the community will reach consensus soon, hence going public.
