Anil Seth blasts Tavos Griffin's video Turing test claim: creating fake people is a terrible idea
round · x · 2026-10-24
"Human computing company" Tavos announced Griffin, a "human interaction model" it claims is the first AI to pass a video Turing test—people can't tell it from a real person even with audio and video. Meanwhile Jack launched Dessa, a full-duplex speech model pitched as talking "like a person." Neuroscientist Anil Seth writes in Nautilus that creating fake people is a terrible idea: scams, exploding mental illness, exploited loneliness, and a society losing its grip on reality—consequences potentially worse than social media. Making fake people, he argues, should not be permitted, let alone celebrated.
