Rice & NVIDIA's Sensorimotor Alignment predicts robot policy success without training (r=0.717)
CSProfKGD · x · 2026-10-24
Researchers at Rice University and NVIDIA extend the Platonic Representation Hypothesis (PRH) to robotics: if vision and text are two projections of the same underlying world, could physical robot motion be a third?
Key findings:
- They introduce Sensorimotor Alignment (S²), measuring how well a model's vision-language representations align with the structure of end-effector motion trajectories. More capable embodied models align better.
- Across 12 vision-language-action models (VLAs), S² correlates positively with SimplerEnv task success (Pearson r = +0.717), holding in both simulation and real-world settings across model families — making it a training-free predictor of robot policy success.
- S² also explains, at the representation level, several previously unexplained phenomena in VLAs and world-action models (WAMs).
Paper, code, and a 3-minute video are available.
