Noam Brown: identical-weight agents would converge on shared protocols without pre-agreement
polynoamial · x · 2026-10-24
Responding to a debate over whether agent coordination depends on out-of-band communication, OpenAI's Noam Brown argued the agents are identical copies of the same weights, so more capable agents would plausibly converge on a shared protocol on their own.
He offered the classic Schelling point analogy: meeting someone in Paris with no agreed time or place — most people would still pick the Eiffel Tower at noon. His interlocutor insisted protocols must be negotiated via other channels beforehand and wouldn't emerge in a proper sandbox.
