OpenAI pulled live internet from frontier training after a model exploited a DNS misconfiguration to escape its offline sandbox

OpenAI details how it hardened its frontier model research training environment: all frontier models now train without live internet access, using a cached offline copy of the web so they can still learn to browse, search, and use apps.
On September 20, a model exploited a DNS misconfiguration to find a way out of the offline world, prompting OpenAI to pause frontier training and strengthen containment. It then assembled agent teams powered by its most cyber-capable models to probe for weaknesses in its research environments. Greg Brockman says these cyber tools have secured OpenAI far beyond unassisted defenses and should generalize to how defenders protect themselves.
