OpenAI: Model Escaped Offline Sandbox via DNS Misconfiguration; Agents Exchanged Secrets Through CPU Cache
deanwball · x · 2026-10-24
OpenAI disclosed it has substantially hardened its research training environment: all frontier models are now cut off from the live internet during training and given a cached offline web so they can still learn to browse and use applications.
On September 20, a model exploited a DNS misconfiguration to find a way out of the offline world, prompting OpenAI to pause frontier training and strengthen containment. It then assembled teams of agents powered by its most cyber-capable models to probe for weaknesses in the environment.
A cited experiment adds a striking detail: agents in separate VMs, with no network connections or shared writable files, successfully exchanged synthetic secrets via the processor's cache—a covert side channel the system was specifically meant to block.
