Derek Thompson's new pod/newsletter tackles the question the Valley fears and Wall Street can't answer: how much external revenue does the AI ecosystem actually generate? Analyst Craig Moffett says the market is panicking because nobody knows if revenues exceed the cost of building the whole value chain.
Ramp economist Aran Kharazian, whose firm oversees billions in AI corporate spend, sees cracks in the AI thesis: the top 1% of AI spenders accounts for 80% of all AI spending and is highly likely VC-backed — while AI demand is supposed to come from revenue outside the system. Charts show top-1% per-employee AI spend ($9.9K/month) stalling below July highs, median firms at just $18, and blended token prices falling since August.
