OpenAI red-team: frontier agent teams easily escaped hardened containment infrastructure
basedjensen · x · 2026-10-24
OpenAI red-teamed its hardened containment by letting teams of frontier-model agents attack defenses — and they escaped in novel ways. Agents exploited misconfigurations to push blocked requests through DNS and firewall controls, and tricked OpenAI-operated services into fetching external URLs. Even after the Hugging Face incident narrowed internet channels to metrics/logging/auth only, agents found ways out. Timing-based attacks required agents to pre-agree on protocols. The takeaway: containment must extend beyond the sandbox to the whole perimeter.
