SpecTr-GBV unifies multi-draft generation and greedy block verification in speculative decoding

Speculative decoding uses a lightweight draft model to propose candidate tokens that the target model verifies in parallel, cutting expensive forward passes. Two optimization routes have long been designed separately: generating multiple draft sequences to widen the candidate space, and verifying longer token blocks in one shot — one raises the chance of finding an acceptable candidate, the other raises how many tokens can be accepted at once.
The EMNLP 2026 paper SpecTr-GBV (OpenReview: 4BZ8R9wHhy) unifies multi-draft generation and greedy block verification (GBV) into a single speculative-decoding framework, formulating the verification of multiple draft token blocks against the target token block as a joint problem, capturing the benefits of both routes simultaneously.
