Since 2020, residential electricity prices have risen 34% at investor-owned US utilities versus 19% at publicly owned ones, per EIA data.
In 2025, most customers of investor-owned utilities paid 12–20 cents per kWh, but 11% faced prices of 30 cents or more; most publicly owned utility customers paid under 14 cents. The gap underscores how ratepayer costs diverge as data-center demand strains the grid.
