Cryptographer Matthew Green: the window to harden everything against AI attacks has slipped
matthew_d_green · x · 2026-10-24
Cryptographer Matthew Green (Johns Hopkins) debates AI threat timelines with @joshuasaxe. Green argues April was the moment to harden everything, and so was July — but it didn't happen: php2shell wasn't even found until August and the patch cycle ran into October. "Defense may be advantaged but it's still too slow." Saxe views php2shell as continuous with a rising tide of AI capabilities not yet translated into damage, and argues now is still the window to harden. A notable split between two security figures: gradual accumulation vs. a missed window.
