Walden Robotics, spun out of Toyota Research Institute in January 2026 and out of stealth that July, is now operational. Co-founder and CEO Russ Tedrake (MIT professor, creator of the Drake robotics toolkit) explained the strategy in a Nikkei Robotics interview: deploy robots in real factory work, where human assistance becomes part of the training data so their large behavior models (LBMs) keep learning on the job. He cited maturing AI models, abundant US talent and capital, and Toyota's productivity needs as the reasons the time was right to commercialize.
