Economist Daniel Rock: ChatGPT likely wasn't the junior hiring shock
soumitrashukla9 · x · 2026-10-24
Economist Daniel Rock pushes back on attributing the junior hiring slump to ChatGPT: making a productivity-based case is hard without the lag, since the technology "flatly was nowhere near good enough" at the time. In conversations with corporate executives, none had found a "payroll saving" solution back then, though it may have changed now.
He stresses the decline itself is a fact worth tracking — the open question is causality, not whether it's happening.
