Modal open-sources Spindle, a Tinker-compatible training server that charges GPU time instead of tokens
graceisford · x · 2026-10-23
Modal released Spindle, an open-source, Tinker-compatible training server that runs in your Modal workspace.
- Existing Tinker scripts run unchanged
- You pay for GPU time instead of per-token pricing, addressing cost concerns as post-training teams scale
- You own the server, so you're not limited to the models and features the provider supports
Modal says Tinker changed how teams do post-training, but scaling teams keep hitting the same two problems: per-token pricing gets expensive and provider-defined feature limits. 'A good API deserves more than one implementation.'
