Reddit Post Claims It's Near-Certain a Backdoor Already Sits in Popular LLM Harnesses or Inference Engines
Ori_553 · reddit · 2026-10-23
A viral Reddit post argues LLM supply chains are the perfect new breeding ground for xz-utils-style attacks: - The 2024 xz utils SSH backdoor nearly succeeded in the most scrutinized codebase on Earth, caught almost by accident; - Agent harnesses and inference engines (llama.cpp, strata, etc.) ship weekly with far less scrutiny — a single legitimate-looking PR buried in thousands of transitive dependencies can sit silent for months or years; - No Opus subscription will easily catch these; - The author estimates the probability that at least one backdoor already exists in popular harnesses/inference engines at "100%". Half-joking ("please be anxious"), but pointing at a real, under-defended attack surface.
