Seth Lazar pushes back on rich-exit thesis: elites will split, datacenter backlash already biting
sethlazar · x · 2026-10-23
Responding to the argument that billionaires building space stations are beyond earthly leverage, researcher Seth Lazar argues the SF view is distorted: some may exit society at the margin, but they need not immiserate everyone else, and enough resource-holding people will oppose it to matter. Empires fell not from resistance but from losing moral legitimacy and elite disagreement. He points to current popular dissatisfaction around datacenters already changing options for trillion-dollar companies, predicting a minimal trade that preserves social stability rather than utopia.
