If LLMs Become the Universal Interface, Who Discovers MCP Services Nobody Knows About?
ThomasBuildLab · reddit · 2026-10-23
The author argues software distribution is heading toward a fundamental shift: when ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini become users' primary interface, apps degrade into executable services behind the LLM, and businesses may no longer need dedicated apps—they expose capabilities directly to models.
The unresolved core problem: how does a general-purpose LLM discover an MCP service that neither the user nor the model knows exists? Most MCP integrations today still require manual configuration, preconnected tools, or directory-based discovery.
Three open questions:
- Could MCP discovery become the next Google Search—indexing executable capabilities instead of web pages?
- How will LLMs discover, evaluate, and pick between competing MCP services based on user intent?
- Can an MCP-first startup acquire customers organically through LLMs without any app install?
The real opportunity may be building services LLMs can autonomously discover and execute—not another app.
