Kubeflow co-founder's proudest internet move: fixing the dotenv package name on PyPI
aronchick · x · 2026-10-23
Asked about his biggest impact on the internet, Kubeflow co-founder aronchick says it was likely resolving the long-standing PyPI dotenv package confusion — beyond co-founding Kubeflow.
Python users running pip install dotenv were never getting what they actually wanted (python-dotenv). Via PyPI's PEP 541 process, he contacted the owner of the dotenv package and persuaded them to hand it over: the fix was for the old package to release a functionally empty version that declares python-dotenv as a dependency (with a version number higher than its last release, 0.0.5), smoothly redirecting the name everyone meant to install.
