Benchmarking PyTorch batching: bigger batches raise GPU throughput but add per-request latency

knowsurfate · x · 2026-10-23

A developer benchmarking a small neural network in PyTorch found a classic tradeoff: increasing batch size lets the GPU process more requests per second, but the time to finish an individual batch also grows. GPUs are built for parallel compute — small batches leave capacity idle, while large batches fill it at the cost of latency. The test ran on an RTX 4060.
