Two Molecules, Four Sticky Ends: A Certified Recipe for Aperiodic Quasicrystals
jarekduda · reddit · 2026-10-23
Jaroslaw Duda (Jagiellonian University) introduces "autocrystals": local pattern statistics that force aperiodic global order. The recipe uses two freely rotating hexagonal species with two complementary pairs of sticky ends; every fully bonded assembly is provably an aperiodic tiling, with certificates included. The catch is growth: forced-only attachment never hits dead ends (a theorem), but guessing growth can build patches that look perfect yet provably can't complete — one finishes to 12×12 but never 14×14, and 89% of guessed 24×24 fills hit provable dead ends. Still simulation and proof, not lab results; DNA-origami tiles and DNA-coated nanoparticles are the natural testbeds.
