Charlie Marsh of Astral explained that when different environments (e.g., Linux vs macOS) need different versions of a package, uv's resolver splits resolution into multiple forks, each starting from the same state and continuing for its own environment. As a side quest, he had Astra (an AI) reduce uv's peak RSS for large solves by around 15-20% via a few small PRs—his favorite being an arena checkpointing trick in the resolver.
