a16z Crypto is becoming a16z Frontier, expanding Chris Dixon's mandate beyond crypto to broader frontier tech (backing Oculus, Coinbase, Solana, Uniswap alumni themes). In the same announcement Marc Andreessen made the case for open source AI: without it, AI "inevitably centralizes down to one or two companies, or maybe just flat out the government" — quipping to "picture government AI" the way you'd picture government sushi. Open source, he argues, is the guarantor that future doesn't happen.
