AI uncovers PHP2Shell flaw threatening the tech behind 70% of all websites

Per the Wall Street Journal, AI helped uncover a critical vulnerability in PHP, which powers roughly 70% of the world's websites. Dubbed PHP2Shell, the flaw stems from how PHP handles memory, letting attackers execute code on vulnerable servers to seize sites and access sensitive data. Ryan Austin of security firm Calif found it in August using OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol. The same AI that surfaced the bug could also make exploitation far easier for criminals, triggering a scramble among researchers and operators.
