Tax data centers, not tokens: an AI taxation proposal from an IMF panel
mioana · x · 2026-10-23
Speaking on an IMF New Economy Forum panel on rethinking taxation for the AI era, the author argues that if governments tax AI to limit mass unemployment, they should tax data centers (investment) rather than tokens (deployment): taxing investment can lower peak unemployment, while taxing deployment mostly just delays it. Either way, he calls such taxes a second-best, temporary tool, and stresses that a safety net for displaced workers is the key priority regardless.
