PoML consensus protocol replaces hash mining with useful LLM inference, paper claims Bitcoin-grade security

An arXiv paper by Wan Ki Wong, Michele Ciampi and Rik Sarkar proposes Proof-of-ML-Inference (PoML), a consensus protocol where miners perform user-requested ML inference (LLMs, diffusion models) instead of wasteful hash puzzles. The authors formalize the computational assumptions needed for ML inference to safely replace hash work, reduce protocol security to the Bitcoin Backbone model, and show in simulations that block production stays close to the calibrated block-time target.
