Anthropomorphizing AI agents makes users overtrust them and invites security failures
mmitchell_ai · x · 2026-10-23
Researcher Mitchell wraps up a thread on a deeper AI security issue: when we anthropomorphize systems, we assume human-like intent understanding and predictability, and overtrust accordingly. That's why subtle (and not-so-subtle) anthropomorphizing language around "AI agents" is toxic — it literally makes us more likely to catalyze AI security failures. Earlier points: the same instruction isn't stable across runs; minor rephrasings change behavior; prompts that work on one model fail on another; output is sampled stochastically, not deterministic.
