Anthropic donates Agent Skills standard to Linux Foundation's AAIF, 280M installs
Anthropic · rss · 2026-10-22
Anthropic is donating Agent Skills, the open standard for giving AI agents specialized knowledge and workflows, to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation — which Anthropic co-founded with Block and OpenAI, and which already hosts the donated Model Context Protocol (MCP).
A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md that teaches an agent a task or domain, born from Claude Code development. Since becoming an open standard in December 2025, it has been integrated by 70+ agent platforms (including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and VS Code), with 1 million skills published and nearly 280 million installs.
Anthropic donates the name, logo, GitHub org, and agentskills.io domain. Engineers from Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI will maintain it as individuals, with David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag as Lead Maintainers. The proposed roadmap covers versioned releases, a formal proposal process, and security guidance for skill authors and installers.
