Modal CEO: GPU demand isn't rectangular — $1B ARR, $16B valuation, 3B sandboxes

Latent Space interviews Modal CEO Erik Bernhardsson (formerly Spotify, where he built Discover Weekly). Since its $5B Series C five months ago, Modal crossed $1B annualized run rate, raised a $750M Series D at a $16B valuation, and has spun up nearly 3 billion sandboxes. Customers include Suno, Runway, and Cognition.
Key points:
- GPU demand isn't rectangular — capacity contracts are fixed GPUs × fixed time, but real workloads spike and dip. Modal's bet is duration transformation: pool demand across thousands of customers and secure capacity underneath. The risk: locking in capacity today and GPU prices fall later.
- The sandbox that almost died — launched so LLM-generated code would have somewhere to run, early adoption was weak enough that shutdown was discussed; coding agents and RL then exploded demand, and sandboxes now generate 1/3 of revenue. Agent-era infrastructure is judged on environment start/restore latency.
- Fast startup as an infra feature — GPU buffers, a custom filesystem, process checkpointing, and GPU memory snapshots make elasticity real.
Also covers GPUs as an asset class, NVIDIA alternatives, lessons from neoclouds, sandbox security with Anthropic, forward-deployed engineers, and why code review is optional at Modal.
