A single map of all 71 companies training their own AI models, plus what stood out:
- Frontier renamed: xAI is now SpaceXAI, SpaceX bought Cursor, Meta's flagship is the closed Muse Spark, and Google's Gemini 4 Argon tops LMArena's text leaderboard on a preliminary score
- China runs the busiest open models: DeepSeek handled 21.8% of OpenRouter requests last week, more than any other lab; Qwen, Kimi, GLM, and MiniMax all shipped open weights this year
- Deals redrew the map: AMD agreed to buy World Labs, Cohere and Aleph Alpha agreed to merge, OpenAI retired the Sora app
- New category — decision models: they never write text, just answer typed questions with a probability (TypeSafe's Jev, plus Liquid AI, Together AI, Galileo)
- Specialists everywhere: music, robotics, biology, world models; Hugging Face lists 3.1M models total; Stanford's AI Index counted 59 notable US models vs 35 from China in 2025
The author also counted 46 live model PM postings across 17 companies at a median posted base of $345K — none requiring hands-on ML research.
