Harness Scaling: varying harness configurations during agentic RL training improves generalization
omarsar0 · x · 2026-10-23
Elvis Saravia breaks down a new paper, "Harness Scaling for Generalizable Agentic RL." Most agentic RL trains through one fixed harness, leading to specialization. The paper treats harness diversity as its own scaling axis:
- They factorize the harness space and pick a compact training subset with balanced factorial coverage, varying one harness component at a time on the same task.
- Across benchmarks, model sizes, and RL algorithms, this consistently improves generalization to unseen white-box harness configurations.
- Models trained this way also transfer better to unseen external black-box harnesses than those trained through one complex black-box harness.
Takeaway: if your model will run inside harnesses you didn't train it in, treat harness diversity as its own scaling dimension.
