HF's Carbon-X: 14B open DNA model matches GPT-6.1 Sol at 1,000x lower cost
lvwerra · x · 2026-10-23
Hugging Face introduced Carbon-X, billed as the best open DNA model: a 14B model mid-trained on DNA and text that can answer sequence questions, explain mutations, and generate new DNA. It beats every open language model and matches GPT-6.1 Sol at 1,000x lower cost. Framed as a 'tool model' for agents: in evaluation, Kimi K3 consulting Carbon-X as a sub-agent rose from 49.4% to 60.5% (+11.1pp) on a DNA intelligence index across five benchmarks. Mid-training+RL curves clearly beat base+RL, underscoring mid-training's role in adapting base models to new domains.
